Computation, Mathematical Notation, and Linguistics

چکیده

Much like ordinary natural languages, most of the mathematical notation we have today has grown up over a long period of time by a kind of natural selection. Occasionally explicit efforts to systematize the notation have been made—though they have been remarkably few and far between. In the late 1600s, Leibniz, for example, was quite concerned with mathematical notation—seeing it as an opportunity to move toward a more universal language, free of the controversies of particular ordinary languages. He invented the integral sign, the d/dx notation for derivatives (where he worried people would try to “cancel the d’s”), and attacked the use of * for multiplication (“will be confused with the letter x”).

Mathematics as a Computational Model

Simple basic mathematical notation and natural deduction are used everyday by the average person to do computation. This paper discusses the beauty of this model of computation and questions why this model has not been adopted. A brief description is given of a prototype implementation of this model. The main focus of the paper is on the considerable benefits the current mathematical model has ...

Book Review: Mathematical Linguistics by Kornai, András

For readers of traditional textbooks such as that of Partee, ter Meulen, and Wall (1990), the term 'mathematical linguistics' denotes a rather narrowly circumscribed set of issues including automata theory, set theory, and lambda calculus, with maybe a little formal language theory thrown in. Kornai's contribution is refreshingly different in that he treats, in this relatively compact volume, p...

Functional Arabic Morphology

Functional Arabic Morphology is a formulation of the Arabic inflectional system seeking the working interface between morphology and syntax. ElixirFM is its high-level implementation that reuses and extends the Functional Morphology library for Haskell. Inflection and derivation are modeled in terms of paradigms, grammatical categories, lexemes and word classes. The computation of analysis or g...

Formalization and Parsing of Mathematical Expressions for Mathematical Computatio

Mathematical expression parsing is very important particularly for the human interface of numeric and algebraic computation systems. In this paper, we define a formalization method and a denotational meaning representation of mathematical expressions. We create grammars and their parser to translate the formalized mathematical expressions into their meaning representation. We also develop a met...

Notation Selection in Mathematical Computing Environments

We examine the problem of notation selection in mathematical computing environments. Users of mathematical software may require different notations for the same expression in a variety of settings. How this can be managed in a general way is the subject of this paper. We describe a software tool that can be configured to allow mathematical packages to provide output according to specified notat...
